Pumpkin Man 2 by Penny Moonz

While this book is the second in the series, it can be read as a standalone, as it is an origin story.

The book moves along at a quick pace and wastes very little time in bringing the titular monster to life. The body count rises with each passing page and sets up nicely for the first book in the series.

If I had one complaint, it was that there were some issues with head-hopping and a few grammatical issues, but neither were enough to pull me out of the story.

The Troop by Nick Cutter

Imagine a Lord of the Flies scenario with a bunch of cub scouts stranded on an island with a mysterious visitor and you get an idea of what to expect with The Troop.

Told via straight storytelling alongside newspaper clippings and interview transcripts, the horror on the island unfold piece by piece as it heads down a stomach churning path.

There are some scenes of animal cruelty that will put some people off, but for me, The Troop is a horror masterpiece. Nick Cutter may well be the best in the business right now.
